What is a Lipoma?

Lipomas are fatty lumps that can occur anywhere in the body.

They are usually felt underneath the skin and can be uncomfortable and unsightly.

The majority of the time, they are nothing to worry about and do not need to be removed unless they become troublesome.

If there is a rapid growth in size or you develop symptoms such as pain or discomfort, then you should consult your doctor to make sure that it is not something more than a simple lipoma.

They can vary in terms of their number, size and location.

Number

Often lipomas are solitary lesions, however they can be multiple and some people can have hundreds of lipomas.

Size

Smaller ones may go unnoticed and it is only when they get larger that the can become a nuisance. They do not normally grow particularly large and are most commonly a few centimetres in diameter.

Location

Lipomas can occur anywhere on the body. This is one of the main distinctions between lipomas and skin cysts. Skin cysts tend to occur just underneath the skin whereas lipomas can be deeper than this. In fact lipomas can occur quite deep and are sometimes beneath muscle and so can be difficult to remove. This is why it may be necessary to get a scan prior to lipoma removal for lipomas in certain locations.

Lipoma Removal From Buttock

This large lipoma was removed from this patient's buttock under local anaesthetic. Shown here immediately after removal.

Lipoma on Shoulder

This lady has a lipoma on her shoulder and we have managed to remove it through a much smaller incision than the size of the lipoma. Seen at 6 weeks.

Lipoma On Forehead

This patient has a lipoma which we have removed and placed the scar in one of the natural skin creases of his forehead so that the scar blends in.

Lipoma Removal From Armpit

This lady had a large lipoma in her armpit, which we have removed at the clinic under local anaesthetic. We have brought the scar inside her arm to hide it.

This lady has a lipoma underneath her bra strap and we have removed it under local anaesthetic and left the scar so that it is hidden by the bra strap.

This lady has a large lipoma on her flank and we have removed it and placed the scar high up so that it is hidden under her bra strap.

Lipoma Removal From Back

This gentleman has a lipoma on his back. We have managed to remove it leaving a much smaller scar than the size of the lipoma.

This lady has a large lipoma on the side of her head. We have placed the scar in to her hairline to make it less visible.

This gentleman has a prominent lipoma on his head by the left temple. We have removed it and left a barely noticeable scar.

This man has a large lipoma on his neck. He has previously had it removed many years ago and it has come back. We have removed it and improved his old scar.
